Naveen Naqvi

Naveen NaqviNaveen Naqvi is a broadcast, online and print journalist. Until January 29, 2010, she was a Senior Anchor at Pakistan’s first English Language channel, DawnNews. During her stint with DawnNews, she presented the morning news program, Breakfast at Dawn. Naveen devised the format of Breakfast at Dawn to include social networking sites Facebook and Twitter, making her an innovative journalist, the first to tweet live on air in Pakistan. She may have left the program and channel, but the format continues to be used by them for that and other shows. She quips that even as others follow her lead, she’ll still be the first!

In July 2009, Naveen started writing with the blog section of Dawn’s website and soon after for The Huffington Post.

The idea behind converging the two media – ‘new’ and ‘mainstream’ – was to give a voice to the liberal, educated and otherwise, unheard Pakistanis. The more selfish reason is that she loves it!

As a journalist, Naveen was invited to the Eurasian Media Forum in April 2009 and April 2010. At the former event she interviewed former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, and chaired a panel discussion with leading analysts and journalists on media management of Gaza conflict. Some of the better known names were George Galloway and Gideon Levy. At this year’s EAMF event, she was a panelist on the World Economic Forum’s session for Networked Journalism.

Also in 2010, Naveen was invited to the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum Climate Change conference where she was a panelist discussing how the social media can benefit journalists reporting stories of our ever-transforming world.

More recently, she was invited on a panel of Pakistan’s top seven journalists to interview the visiting US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.

Prior to DawnNews, Naveen worked from 2002 – 05 as Producer Pakistan of NBC News. She started off as a fixer and worked her way up to bureau chief. Here she worked on news stories for Nightly News and Today show, conducted on-camera interviews, reported breaking news for MSNBC, wrote stories for MSNBC.com, and managed the Islamabad bureau. She assisted in the coordination of two interviews with General Pervez Musharraf – one for Tom Brokaw.

Naveen has also been (in another life) an entertainment television production manager, television actor and model. As the presenter for Music Channel Charts, she did another first for Pakistani TV when she became the first VJ ever.
